What is Health Sharing?

Health sharing is a model where members contribute a set amount each month to a community fund. This fund is then used to help cover the eligible medical expenses of other members. It operates on principles of mutual aid and shared responsibility, distinct from traditional health insurance.

How does Health Sharing differ from traditional insurance?

Unlike traditional insurance, health sharing is not regulated by state insurance departments and does not guarantee payment of medical expenses. Instead, members share medical costs based on shared beliefs and guidelines set by the health-sharing organization.

Who is eligible to join a health-sharing plan?

Eligibility can vary depending on the specific health-sharing organization. Generally, members are like-minded individuals who agree to a set of shared beliefs or ethical guidelines. There are often no restrictions based on race, religion, or creed, but some organizations might have specific requirements.

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

Coverage for pre-existing conditions varies by health-sharing organization. Many health-sharing plans impose waiting periods before pre-existing conditions are eligible for sharing, and some conditions might not be shareable until a certain period has passed without symptoms or treatment.

How are medical bills paid?

After receiving medical care, members typically submit their bills to the health-sharing organization. The bills are reviewed for eligibility, and once approved, the member pays their initial unshareable amount (similar to a deductible). The remaining costs are shared among the community members.

Can I choose my own healthcare provider?

Yes, most health-sharing organizations allow members to choose any licensed healthcare provider. There are usually no network restrictions, but it’s recommended to request itemized bills and negotiate self-pay discounts.

What are the costs involved in a health-sharing plan?

Costs can include a monthly contribution, which varies based on factors like age and family size, and an Initial Unshareable Amount (IUA), which is the amount members must pay out-of-pocket before the sharing begins. The exact costs depend on the plan you choose.

Is there an enrollment period?

Most health-sharing organizations allow members to join at any time, without specific enrollment periods. You can usually choose when your membership starts.

How are prescription medications handled?

Prescription coverage varies by organization. Some health-sharing plans may include prescriptions as part of the sharable costs, but there may be limitations based on whether the medication is for a chronic condition or a pre-existing condition.

Is health sharing the right choice for me?

Health sharing can be a cost-effective alternative to traditional health insurance, especially for those who want to align their healthcare expenses with their ethical or religious beliefs. However, it’s essential to review the guidelines of the specific health-sharing organization to ensure it meets your needs.
